Germany’s Max Planck Matter to Life Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (MtL-URO) 2027 is inviting applications from undergraduate students interested in gaining practical research experience in an international scientific environment.

The program offers a 10-week research internship at a Matter to Life faculty laboratory in Germany. Selected students will receive financial support covering travel, accommodation and a monthly living allowance.

What Does the Program Offer?

The MtL-URO program is designed to give Bachelor’s students an opportunity to work on a specific research question under the supervision of researchers affiliated with Matter to Life faculty laboratories.

The financial support includes:

  • Travel expenses to and from the student’s home country
  • Accommodation in Germany
  • A monthly allowance for living expenses
  • A 10-week research placement in a Matter to Life faculty laboratory

Participating laboratories are located in several German cities, including Munich, Heidelberg, Göttingen, Dresden, Jena, Mainz, Münster, Potsdam and Aachen, among others.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should meet the following conditions:

  1. Be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or undergraduate degree.
  2. Remain enrolled for the entire 10-week internship period.
  3. Have completed at least 1.5 semesters of their degree by the time of application.
  4. Have completed at least two semesters before the internship begins.
  5. Have a minimum GPA of 1.7.
  6. Have an academic background relevant to biology, chemistry, physics, informatics, materials science, engineering, bioengineering or a related field.
  7. Demonstrate a genuine interest in Matter to Life research.

Important Note for Applicants

Applicants must remain enrolled in their Bachelor’s program throughout the entire 10-week internship. Therefore, students who will graduate before completing the internship are not eligible according to the provided criteria.

  • Current university transcript
  • Preferred Matter to Life laboratory
  • Personal statement – 1 page
  • Available timeframe for completing the 10-week internship
